•Of course, they’re polar opposites when it comes to their willingness and enthusiasm to approach a crush and act out on their feelings. Gaara will stand back and let the feelings smolder inside of him. He’s much too hesitant to make a move, and will gain no progress at all with the crush for a long time

•On the other hand, Naruto’s impulsivity will push him into action almost immediately. Every moment of his free time is spent getting to know the crush and spending time with them

•Gaara finds out about Naruto’s crush because Naruto tells him. When Naruto is crushing on someone, he won’t keep his mouth shut. It’s bound to slip through the cracks at some point. It’s just how you’d imagine it: When you’re crushing hard on someone you want to cover every single detail of your time together, even if the minuscule details are important to no one but you. Naruto is descriptive and enthusiastic and energetic as ever, recalling the time their hands accidentally brushed against each other and he swore they hinted at wanting to hold his hand

•Immediately, Gaara is nervous and apprehensive. Not at all jealous though. Jealousy just doesn’t come easy to Gaara. At most, he’d be worried. Naruto is charismatic and endearing in his own way. And no one needs to be reminded of how easily people are drawn to Naruto Uzumaki. So suspicion and doubt creeps in almost immediately for Gaara. It’s actually a little sad, poor Gaara ))): He tries to force himself to get over his feelings as soon as possible, because he just knows nothing will ever come out of it, not when Naruto is the better option

•Gaara cherry picks who he tells about his crush. Kankuro and Temari are likely to be the first contenders—Temari before Kankuro, I’d bet. Gaara knows Kankuro will spill the beans before Temari ever will. And if he’s seeking advice, Temari’s sound judgement will prove more useful to him. She’ll probably notice the way Gaara looks at them too, just a bit longer than he would the average person. And if she looks hard enough, she can see Gaara smiling more often when they’re around

•Naruto will put the moves on the crush before long. A confession is bound to come out at some point, Naruto is too impatient to wait. And assuming they’re confident enough to admit it, the crush will tell Naruto that there’s someone else. He’ll be crushed, of course. Maybe a little irritated, depending on how well the crush reacted to his flirting. But hopefully they didn’t lead him on, in which case, it’s easier for Naruto to accept

•The full severity of the situation hits him when they finally mention that Gaara is their someone else. Naruto can tell by the sincerity in their voice and the soft expression on their face that they really mean it

•Naruto’s first instinct is to take the ignorance is bliss route. He likes them so much, yet Gaara is such a good friend that Naruto would give up his crush with no hesitation when it came down to it. So Naruto might try to hold onto the crush if he could. However, it’s inevitable that he would give in. He just feels too guilty forsaking his crush’s feelings, and would as if he somehow cheated Gaara out of a golden opportunity

•At that point, Naruto is pushing aside his affections in an effort to focus on Gaara. Naruto will encourage his crush to go talk to Gaara, bragging that the Kazekage has been his friend for years and he knows everything about him

•So as Naruto takes on the wingman role, he realizes one thing: Does Gaara even like the crush? Naruto may or may not have noticed that Gaara always seemed invested in their conversations when he mentioned the crush. There had to be a reason the Kazekage endured his ramblings

•Naruto is pleasantly surprised when he next sees Gaara and lets the cat out of the bag, only to have Gaara confess his own feelings

•It’s a bewildered, hesitant confession. And Gaara immediately regrets it because damn, did he just conflict their friendship because of it? He knows how strong Naruto’s feelings were for the crush. So does Naruto resent him for it?

•Gaara will apologize, but Naruto stops him and tells him there’s no need to apologize. Naruto is enthused by the blush on his friend’s face, and realizes that the idea of his crush being happy with someone else isn’t so bad as long as it’s Gaara. He knows Gaara wont hurt them, and is actually excited with the prospect of being a matchmaker. He promptly encourages Gaara to go confess
